Learning Objectives

The Virtual Reality (VR) treatment project was a pilot project that began during the pandemic with funding from Thunderbird Partnership Foundation and The Youth Hope Fund.  YSAC centres were invited to volunteer for a project to explore the use of virtual reality as an adjunct treatment therapy, Charles J Andrew, Leading Thunderbird Lodge and  KaNaChiHih staff worked together to test a variety of applications that would assist in meeting therapeutic goals like improving sleep, improving physical activity, and increasing connection points. In the final stage adolescents were introduced to a variety of ways to use technology for self-directed mental health interventions including mental health foundations literacy (sleep, nutrition, exercise), MH intervention (anxiety reduction), emotional regulation, digital emotional intelligence, seeking support, cultural health connections and psychoeducational session.

  • Developed literature review of potential benefits and connection to YSAC therapeutic Goals
  • Tested applications
  • Developed a 12-session core curriculum
  • Completed pre and post assessment
  • Developed an online course for staff
  • Trained one new post pilot centre (Walgwan)
  • Developed a Virtual Reality Private space 3d world
