Program
The Charles J Andrew Healing Centre is an accredited 10 bed residential family healing centre serving Innu, Inuit & First Nations people from the Atlantic provinces and all across Canada. The Centre opened in 2000 in response to a crisis of gas-sniffing and suicides among Innu youth in Sheshatshiu, Labrador. The multi disciplinary program assists families to address emotional, spiritual, family, school, employment and addictions and mental health related issues. The program aims to provide a supportive and therapeutic environment where the whole family may develop the tools needed to meet their goals and successfully transition home following the 12-week program.
The clinical portion of the program takes place at the main building in Sheshatshiu. A team of dedicated staff works with families on core issues of trauma, family dynamics, life skills, emotional management and addictions processes. Nutshimit (Land based) is one of the core components of the program based on Indigenous culture, this land-based program comprises 50% of the service delivery. This includes elder’s traditional knowledge and teachings.
