Learning Objectives

  • Recognize signs and symptoms of use, as well as associated health risks.
  • Explain the relationship between brain mechanisms and substance misuse.
  • Describe psychological dependencies and complications.
  • Explain patterns of progression/regression and recovery.
  • Understand harm reduction practices as they relate to specific substances.
  • Honor the connection of hope, belonging, meaning and purpose to recovery.
  • Understand the major drugs and drug classes currently used in the DSM.

This course was developed in 2020 as a fully online course. The course focuses on the brain and body systems and understanding the similarities and differences in different drug classes and their effects. Each unit is framed with a holistic recovery and harm reduction focus. There is a strong emphasis on understanding and applying learning in a community context through reflective exercises, readings, and discussions.
